From Ravenstonedale we crossed the A685 and walked over fields filled with noisy lambs, some inquisitive, some shy, a lovely sight. The path then took us downhill along Scandal Beck to Smardale packhorse Bridge. By luck rather than good judgement the Ravenstonedale and Smardale Walk fitted the bill exactly. We could walk South together along very quiet roads, looping back to the hotel, and then I could do the four miles to the North across country.
